Waterloo Receives Fair Trade Campus Designation

The University of Waterloo recently celebrated its designation as Canada’s 36^th Fair Trade Campus.

Fairtrade certified products are available at a wide range of outlets across the campus, including residence cafeterias, non-franchise coffee shops and other locations.

“With over 30,000 students on campus, students play a vital role in keeping campus sustainable,” says Seneca Velling, VP of Operations and Finance for the Federation of Students (Feds).

“Our students and campus community have been passionate in supporting Fair Trade products for many years,” says Lee Elkas, Director of UW Food Services. “The values of the Fair Trade designation align with Food Services and the shared commitment to fair compensation, treatment of employees and protection of the environment.”  

Julie Francoeur, Fairtrade Canada’s Executive Director, said “The students and staff of Waterloo are showing real leadership by achieving the Fair Trade Campus designation. We thank everyone involved for their efforts to make a real difference for the 1.66 million farmers and workers in the Fairtrade system.”
